Several clashes broke out between protesters demanding quota reform and the police in the capital’s Science Lab area on Thursday.
Police threw sound grenades at the protesters around 1:30pm on Thursday.
Although the surrounding areas including New Market, Dhaka College, and Elephant Road were quite calm since morning, a large number of law enforcers took position in the Science Lab after 11am.
Protesters approached in small groups and attempted to take a position on the road, however, they were dispersed by the police action.
Around 1:30pm, more protesters joined them and blocked the road. As a result, the presence of vehicles on Mirpur Road has decreased drastically.
Meanwhile, shops in the Science Lab and New Market areas have not opened much since morning.
Earlier in the day, students demanding quota reform clashed with police in Merul Badda, near Brac University.
The confrontation began at around 11am, when police attempted to disperse the protesters by firing tear gas shells.
The skirmish halted traffic in the Merul Badda area, according to media reports.
The protesters on Wednesday declared a complete shutdown, demanding the end of what they called police brutality against their peaceful student movement, justice for those killed during demonstrations, the assurance of a violence-free campus and a rational reform of the quota system.
They announced that during this shutdown, only emergency services, including hospitals and media, would remain operational.
