The agitating students in Bangladesh Engineering and Technology (Buet) against the resumption of politics on campus sent a letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requesting her to keep the Buet campus out of student politics even if it requires the amendment of law.

The students read out an open letter to PM Sheikh Hasina at a press briefing held at the registrar building of the university on Tuesday evening.

"Honourable prime minister, it is our earnest appeal to you. Implement the dream the greatest Bangalee of all time had dreamt about Buet. Implement the policy he adopted. Keep Buet out of student politics, even if that requires law reform. Because laws are created for the sake of justice,” reads the letter.

In this letter, the students presented their plea to the prime minister.

They said in the letter: “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman realized that the nature of Buet is different. So he himself kept this university out of the purview of politics. Today, when the leaders and activists of the political party formed by him talk about bringing a specialized university like Buet under politics at any cost, we believe that the ideology and decision of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is insulted.”

The letter added: “It is not possible for any student to take part in political activities after concentrating on routine studies and research in this university.”

After the court's decision on Monday, student politics is going to be resumed on this campus.

In this context, the students urged the vice-chancellor and teachers to take the initiative to stop student politics at Buet.

They made the same request to the prime minister at a press conference in the evening.

After the murder of Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at Buet, who was beaten to death by Chhatra League activists at the university's Sher-e-Bangla Hall on October 7, 2019, the university banned student politics.

Later, on 8 December 2021, a Dhaka court sentenced 20 Buet students to death and five others to life imprisonment for the murder.
