The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed the private universities of the country to expedite the implementation of unique IDs for students.
The instructions were given at a workshop organized by the commission on Tuesday.
Describing Unique ID as a student-friendly initiative, UGC chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah called upon the private university authorities to implement it expeditiously.
By creating unique IDs, students will get identification numbers from the beginning to the end of their educational life.
A unique ID will store all information, including the admission of students. As a result, students will not have to face any problem in getting higher education at home and abroad and verifying their credentials in the field of employment.
UGC member Prof Biswajit Chand said the commission had undertaken this initiative to protect students from fraud and ensure verification of certificates.
This ID will make it easier to know the number of students admitted as opposed to the sanctioned seats in private universities as well as identifying fake certificate holders, he said.
He said: "Under this ID, students will be able to easily transfer credit to international institutions. This will also prevent any private universities of the country from getting blacklisted by any other country."
All the information of the students will be stored on the main server as well as commission server and backup server. As a result, even if a university closes or a server crashes due to a disaster, the information will be safe and there will be no problem in verifying the credentials of the students, he added.
