Second shipment of Chinese vaccines for university students

Bangladesh is set to receive another 600,000 doses of Covid vaccines from China as a gift this month

Update : 06 Jun 2021, 06:10 PM

The health authorities in Bangladesh have decided to use the next shipment of the 600,000 doses of the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine exclusively for final-year public university students or students who need to join classes after exams.

Prof Robed Amin, spokesperson for the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the matter in a Covid-19 bulletin on Sunday.

The first shipment of 500,000 doses of Sinopharm shots are being administered to medical, nursing and medical technology students, and Chinese nationals working in Bangladesh.

“Sinopharm will gift us another 600,000 doses within a few days, which we have decided to administer solely to public university students who are going to sit for their final exams and those who have to attend classes following the exams,” the DGHS official said.

Prof Amin said Bangladesh would receive 15 million doses of the vaccine once the purchase agreement with Sinopharm was signed.

“[Besides,] The Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine has been approved by the drug regulator and the deal to buy Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine is at the final stage as well,” he added.

The uncertainty clouding Bangladesh’s inoculation campaign would be dispelled once all the vaccines arrived, Prof Robed Amin said, holding out an assurance.
