Although the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) results have been published amid the Covid-19 pandemic, there is growing uncertainty among students and their parents about whether they will get admission to the best colleges.
135,898 students achieved GPA-5 this year, but only 50,000 seats are available at reputable institutions of the country. Furthermore, most of those with GPA-5s are science students.
Prof Shaikh Ekramul Kabir, a member of the Education Policy-2010 Formulation Committee, said both GPA-5 and pass rates have increased compared to last year. Students with good results will naturally prefer reputable institutions, so there will be uncertainty among students about the limited number of available seats.
“If teachers at good institutions are given an opportunity to transfer to institutions that are lagging behind, this will improve the quality of those institutions and students may become more eager to gain admission there,” he suggested.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Akhtaruzzaman, also said students naturally prefer institutions with good reputations, and the perception that other institutions are not worth it needs to change.
Dr Syed Manzoorul Islam of the Department of English at DU said: “Most of those who got GPA-5 are from the city, because of coaching and private tuition. There is no difference in merit between a student from a village and the city. The only difference is opportunity.
“In order to take these meritorious students forward, special importance should be given to the overall improvement of educational institutions in the villages,” he added.

The Inter-Education Coordinating Board sent a proposal to the Ministry of Education on May 17, asking for the admission process for Class XI to start from June 7.
The proposed online admission process will be conducted in three steps for one month and 20 days. The admission process will begin with the approval of the Ministry of Education, according to ministry sources.
According to the Committee on Admission to Higher Secondary Institutions, there are about 3,000,000 seats for class XI in 8,500 colleges across the country. Of these colleges, only 145 are considered to be reputable and they have a little over 50,000 seats.
Over 300,000 students have passed from Dhaka Board. Of them, 36,047 achieved GPA-5 and 133, 355 students were in the GPA-4 to GPA-5 range. Similar numbers were posted by the Madrasa Board.
Harun-ur-Rashid, college inspector of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, said: “Due to the lack of skilled teachers at rural institutions, especially in English and science subjects, students move to the city for admission to good institutions. As a result, crowding for admission to reputable institutions in the city increases.”
He urged all candidates to carefully read the instructions of the application process, so that they do not make mistakes that could jeopardize their admission.
