A national athlete, also first year student of Chittagong University, was allegedly beaten up by a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal in confinement at a dormitory Tuesday as the boxer refused to pay extortion money.
The injured is Monayebur Rahman Khan of physical education and sports science department. He was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital after the incident that took place around 1pm.
“Monayebur is a national boxer and he also secured first place in the admission test for 2016-2017 academic session,” department Chairman AHM Rokibul Mowla told the Dhaka Tribune.
Monayebur successfully led the junior team at the national level during his study at BKSP.
According to campus sources, CU unit Chhatra Dal Joint Secretary Salah Uddin Ujjal and his associates forcibly took the national athlete to room No 212 of AF Rahman Hall of the campus and beat him up demanding Tk3 lakh.
Ujjal is a student of computer science and engineering department under 2009-2010 session.
Prof Rokibul said: “I called him to the department along with 29 other students of first year asking them to attend the practical class where they were scheduled to give measurement for tracksuit.
“Monayebur came out to the department around noon to withdraw money from bKash. Later we learned that he was picked up by a group of men and found him critically injured.”
Prof Rokibul said that he had requested the proctrorial body to take legal action against the culprits.
“Monayebur was set to go aboard under a camp, but now his journey has turned uncertain,” he added.
Proctor Ali Asgar said that they were looking into the matter and stern action would be taken after getting a complaint over the matter.
CU unit Chhatra Dal General Secretary Shahidul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that he had phoned Ujjal several times after learning about the incident, but his phone was found switched off.
“Organisational action will be taken against him if he is found guilty,” Shahidul added.
