An AI-based automated traffic enforcement system has gone live in Dhaka under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), introducing digital prosecution for a wide range of traffic violations through AI-integrated surveillance cameras.
The system officially went into operation on Thursday.
The DMP Traffic Division has installed advanced CCTV cameras integrated with AI technology, described as “AI-based Road Transport Act 2018 Violation Detection Software,” at key intersections and important locations across the city. The system is being used to detect violations and initiate digital cases based on video and image evidence.
According to the initiative, violations now being flagged include running red lights, crossing stop lines at signals or intersections, driving in the wrong direction, indiscriminate passenger pickup causing obstruction, illegal parking, blocking the left lane, and other offences.
Authorities said notices are being issued and sent to vehicle owners and drivers following detection of violations.
The AI-based system has been deployed at multiple locations, including Shahbagh, InterContinental intersection, Banglamotor, Karwan Bazar, Bijoy Sarani and up to the Airport Road corridor.
If any vehicle violates traffic rules while on the road—such as ignoring a red signal, crossing designated lines or obstructing lanes—the AI-enabled cameras automatically scan the number plate and generate an auto-case. Case information is then sent to the owner’s mobile phone via SMS.
DMP’s Additional Police Commissioner of the Traffic Division Md Anisur Rahman said auto-generated cases began Thursday morning through CCTV footage and still images captured across Dhaka.
“From now on, any violation of traffic law will automatically result in a case, and related notices will be sent to owners and drivers by post,” he said.
He added that after receiving notices, offenders are paying fines at DMP headquarters and concerned traffic divisions. However, many are not complying, and the DMP has warned that arrest warrants may be issued against those who fail to pay.
In an official statement, the DMP said the initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion, modernize traffic management and improve citizen services. It said enforcement is being carried out through video and still-image capture, with auto-generated notices sent via registered post using e-traffic prosecution software.
The statement added that offenders must appear at the DMP headquarters or relevant traffic divisions and settle fines under the Road Transport Act 2018 through bank or mobile banking channels.
It further warned that if recipients fail to respond after receiving notices, further legal action—including summons or arrest warrants—may be initiated through the Special Metropolitan Magistrates of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The DMP also cautioned the public against fraud, advising vehicle owners and drivers not to engage in any unofficial financial transactions or share personal information regarding case payments outside the official process.
“If any individual or dishonest group sends messages or attempts fraud in the name of payment of cases from video or CCTV cameras, citizens are requested to immediately contact the nearest police station or concerned traffic division,” the statement said.
