Various Chhatra Dal unit leaders and activists once again blocked the capital’s busy Shahbagh intersection on Tuesday, amid rain, demanding justice for the murder of Dhaka University student and organization leader Shahriar Alam Shammo.
They began blocking the Shahbagh intersection around 3:30pm to press for several demands, including justice for Shammo's murder and ensuring a safe campus.
Despite a downpour, they continued their sit-in, blocking traffic in the area.
As a result, commuters faced difficulties moving through Shahbagh in the rain.
A large number of Chhatra Dal activists and leaders were chanting different slogans.
Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib, along with leaders from Dhaka University, Dhaka metropolitan units, and others, participated in the protest.
They cleared the Shahbagh intersection after nearly one and a half hours, and traffic movement resumed around 5:15pm after the protesters left.
Before ending the blockade, Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir Uddin warned that if any more Chhatra Dal activists are attacked, a fierce movement will be launched along with general students.
He also demanded the immediate resignation of the vice-chancellor and proctor of Dhaka University.
Nasir questioned why CCTV footage of the incident has still not been collected so many days after Shammo's murder.
Protesting “negligence” in the investigation into the Shammo murder case and demanding the arrest and trial of the “actual” killers, Chhatra Dal had also blocked the Shahbagh intersection for nearly two hours on Sunday afternoon.
During that day's program, the Chhatra Dal’s top leaders demanded the resignation of the DU vice chancellor and proctor, accusing them of failing to ensure student safety.
They also warned that if the government showed a lack of sincerity in arresting and prosecuting Shammo's killers, they would lay siege to the State Guest House Jamuna, the chief adviser's residence.
Shammo, a student of Dhaka University, was killed in a stabbing by assailants near Suhrawardy Udyan on the night of May 13.
He was the literary and publication affairs secretary of the Chhatra Dal’s AF Rahman Hall unit and a student from the 2018-19 academic session at the Institute of Education and Research.
Following the incident, his brother filed a murder case at Shahbagh police station.
