Detectives have arrested a man whose masked face and capped head were caught on CCTV footage following the murder of two sisters in the Shewrapara area of Dhaka.
The suspect was apprehended by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed Joint Commissioner (South) Mohammad Nasirul Islam on Monday afternoon.
“One of the people involved in the Shewrapara double murder has been arrested. The motive behind the killings has also been uncovered,” he said. Further details will be shared at a press conference at the DMP Media Centre later in the day, he added.
Earlier, on Friday, two sisters — Mariam Begum, 60, a former official of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), and her younger sister, Sufia Begum, 52 — were found dead in their second-floor apartment in West Shewrapara.
Both had been stabbed to death, and police recovered their bodies around 11pm.
In the course of the investigation, police reviewed the building's CCTV footage. It showed a man wearing blue jeans and a dark blue shirt entering the building’s second floor around 3pm on Friday. He was also wearing a surgical mask and an orange cap.
The footage later showed the man leaving the building about an hour and a half later, having changed his clothes.
