Law enforcement authorities have assured full security for the theatre troupe Prangonemor ahead of their scheduled staging of the play Shesher Kobita at the Mohila Samity auditorium in the capital on Monday and Tuesday.
The play, directed by actor Nuna Afroz and produced by Prangonemor, was initially scheduled for Sunday and Monday to mark Chaitra Sankranti and Pohela Boishakh.
However, the Mohila Samity authorities decided to cancel the Sunday show after receiving a threatening letter from a mob.
In response, director Nuna Afroz posted an open letter on Facebook addressed to the cultural affairs adviser, seeking redress.
Playwright Ananta Hira also shared a post regarding the issue.
Theatre activists soon called for a protest program on Sunday afternoon.
Following public outcry and growing attention, the administration moved into action.
Ramna police assured the organizers that all necessary security arrangements would be made to allow the play to go on.
In light of the police assurance, the protest program was postponed, confirmed Nuna Afroz.
In a post from her verified Facebook profile, she wrote: “The April 14 show will be held as scheduled. The cancelled April 13 show has been rescheduled for April 15.”
She also wrote: “Those who bought tickets for April 13 can attend on April 15 using the same ticket. Depending on seat availability, April 13 ticket holders may also attend the April 14 show.”
Speaking to the daily Prothom Alo, she said: “The officer-in-charge of Ramna police station called me. He came and inspected the venue himself. After that, he assured us of full protocol and requested we hold the show today (Sunday).”
She added: “The Mohila Samity authorities also urged us to proceed with the show today. But since that is no longer feasible, we have decided to shift today’s show to Tuesday.”
When contacted, Ramna police station Officer-In-Charge Golam Faruk told Prothom Alo: “They had not informed us earlier. As soon as we found out, we took steps and assured them of full security to hold their program.”
