JnU suspends classes, exams in solidarity with Gaza

Jagannath University (JnU) has suspended all classes and examinations as part of a "No Work" program by both faculty and students, protesting the ongoing attacks by Israeli forces on Gaza.

The initiative aligns with a global student movement calling for a boycott of academic activities in solidarity with Palestine.

The university administration has also expressed its support by joining the "No Work" program.

This information was shared in a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Office on Sunday, expressing solidarity with the programs undertaken by the university’s Teachers’ Association.

The statement mentioned that, in protest of Israel’s ongoing barbaric attacks on Gaza, the Jagannath University administration expresses solidarity with all the programs announced by the Teachers’ Association for Monday.

Regarding this, the General Secretary of the Teachers’ Association, Professor Dr Md Rois Uddin, said: “The barbaric attacks on Muslims in Gaza are intolerable. We have taken this initiative to express our sympathy towards the people of Gaza. At the same time, we urge the university administration to adopt a positive stance toward our initiative.”

Meanwhile, in solidarity with the global movement, students from various departments began announcing the boycott of classes and exams from Sunday afternoon. By evening, all departments of the university issued clear statements on boycotting classes and exams.

Among them were the Departments of Mass Communication and Journalism, Management Studies, Anthropology, Chemistry, Islamic Studies, Sociology, Law, Political Science, Finance, and the Faculty of Fine Arts, as well as various other departments and institutes.

Mosabbir, a student of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, said: “Only Allah is the final refuge for the people of Gaza. From afar, we are praying and protesting in any way we can to express our stance. For this reason, we have boycotted classes and exams. We are also expressing solidarity with all protest programs against the genocide.”

The university’s Proctor, Professor Dr Md Tajammul Haque, said:“In protest of the barbaric attacks in Gaza, the university’s Teachers’ Association is expressing solidarity and observing the ‘No Work’ program. Accordingly, classes and exams have been declared suspended.”
