Shibir-backed candidates lead top three posts in JnUCSU election

JnUCSU and hall parliament elections are being held for the first time in over two decades

Chhatra Shibir-backed candidates are leading in the top three posts of the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) election, according to partial results announced by the Election Commission.

More than two decades after the university’s establishment, the JnUCSU and hall parliament elections–2025 are being held for the first time. Voting took place from 9am to 3:30pm on Tuesday at 178 booths across 39 centers. Vote counting began later that afternoon and continued throughout Wednesday.

As of 9pm on Wednesday, the Election Commission had completed counting votes at 28 centers and announced the results.

In the vice president (VP) post, Riazul Islam of the Shibir-backed “Adommo Jobiyan Oikya” panel is leading with 3,729 votes. His closest rival, AKM Rakib of the “Oikoboddho Nirbhik Jobiyan” panel—formed by Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, and general students—has secured 3,298 votes.

In the General Secretary (GS) post, Abdul Alim Arif of the “Adommo Jobiyan Oikya” panel is leading with 3,842 votes. His nearest competitor, Khadijatul Kubra of the “Oikyaboddho Nirbhik Jobiyan” panel, has received 1,465 votes.

In the assistant general secretary (AGS) post, Masud Rana of the “Adommo Jobiyan Oikya” panel is ahead with 3,337 votes, while Atikul Islam Tanjil of the “Oikoboddho Nirbhik Jobiyan” panel has received 2,939 votes.

Election Commissioners Zulfikar Mahmud, Anisur Rahman, and Kaniz Fatema Kakoli were announcing the results. They said counting in other departments is ongoing and the remaining results will be announced sequentially.

So far, results have been announced for the centers of Geography and Environment, Public Administration, Anthropology, Pharmacy, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Genetic Engineering, Finance, Marketing, Microbiology, Philosophy, Biochemistry, Zoology, Botany, Statistics, Social Work, Sociology, Law and Land Administration, Mathematics, Islamic Studies, Mass Communication and Journalism, Music, Chemistry, Psychology, English, the Institute of Education and Research (IER), the Faculty of Fine Arts, Economics, and History.
