A former Buet student, identified as Ahsan Ahmed alias Masum, 36, has been arrested in connection with the hijacking of a Toyota Harrier Jeep in the capital’s Shahbagh area.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) apprehended him in the early hours of Monday with the stolen vehicle and a foreign pistol.
According to Shahbagh police, the hijacking occurred on March 7, 2025, when an unidentified individual contacted Mashrur Nair, 29, an importer and distributor of Japanese cars, to inquire about purchasing a Toyota Harrier.
Mashrur, the owner of the Wheel Deals showroom in Paribagh, invited the caller to inspect the vehicle at his garage. The following evening, three individuals arrived for a test drive, accompanied by Mashrur’s cousin, Md Piyal Mahmud.
During the test drive, the suspects drove to the metro rail station in front of PG Hospital. At approximately 8:15pm, one of them pointed a pistol at Piyal’s head, forced him out of the vehicle, and fled.
The hijackers later sent a WhatsApp message to Mashrur, threatening him not to file a case or share the incident on social media.
Following an investigation, law enforcement identified the suspects using technological analysis.
On Monday at around 3:15am, DMP officers arrested Ahsan Ahmed near the Amari Dhaka Hotel in Gulshan. The stolen Jeep, a pistol with five rounds of ammunition, and three mobile phones were recovered from his possession.
The weapon bore the inscription "Made in China," and the bullets were marked with "KF 7.65."
During interrogation, Ahsan Ahmed confessed to being a professional criminal with a history of similar offenses.
A former student of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), he was known for his technological expertise and had previously hijacked vehicles to extort ransom from owners.
Multiple carjacking cases had already been filed against him in different police stations.
Legal proceedings against the suspect are currently underway.
