An activist of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was stabbed to death in the Chashara Balurmat area of Narayanganj on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Apurba, 25.

Narayanganj Additional Police Superintendent (Crime and Operations) Tarek Al Mehedi said that Apurba was stabbed following a heated argument with Samrat, a local youth, after a torch procession organized by the city unit Chhatra Dal to protest rape and murder on Sunday night.

The procession, which had started at the Masdair Central Eidgah at 9:30pm, ended in front of the Narayanganj Press Club.

As the participants were heading home, Samrat stopped Apurba.

Witnesses said that during an altercation, Samrat stabbed Apurba in the abdomen, and he died from his injuries on the way to a local hospital.

Local residents caught Samrat and handed him over to the police after beating him.

Samrat, a 25-year-old from the Gola Chippa area, claimed he had no prior knowledge of Apurba's political affiliation and said the confrontation stemmed from a personal dispute.

Azizul Islam Rajib, former joint secretary of the Narayanganj city Chhatra Dal, condemned the attack, saying: "Apurba was one of our workers. Our procession was peaceful, but this senseless violence claimed a life. We are committed to ensuring justice for Apurba."

The body of the deceased was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for an autopsy.
