Pedestrians beat up two men suspected of being muggers and hung them upside down from the overbridge in front of BNS Center in Dhaka’s Uttara on Tuesday night.

Later, police rescued them and took them to Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Govt Hospital.

According to police sources, the two are Bakul, 40, and Nazim, 35.

Uttara East police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shamim Ahmed said their condition remained critical.

When asked about the reason behind the beating, Shamim said preliminary information suggested that the two had been caught while attempting a mugging.

“Passersby then brought them to the main road, took them onto the overbridge and subjected them to a beating. However, no direct victims of the mugging have come forward yet."

Meanwhile, several videos of the incident have gone viral on social media, showing multiple pedestrians tying the suspects' feet with ropes and hanging them upside down from the bridge before beating them with sticks.

The victims' clothes were seen coming off during the assault.

Local sources said a recent surge in muggings had fuelled public anger, which had led to the violent reaction from passersby upon catching the suspects.

Uttara east police said they had not received any complaints in this connection.
