Robbers have stolen Tk1.21 crore from a fuel pump in Uttara when employees carried the cash to a bank for deposit.
The fuel pump, DL Petrol Pump, is linked to Taseen Akhter Haque Del, maternal cousin of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Police have yet to arrest anyone over the robbery.
The incident occurred around 10:30am on Sunday, on a road south of the RAB-1 battalion. Several people riding three motorcycles intercepted the vehicle carrying the cash. They first rammed the vehicle, then attacked the employees with sharp weapons and snatched the money bag.
The attackers fled the scene with the cash.
The stolen Tk1.21 crore belonged to DL Petrol Pump. Pump manager Karim filed a case at Airport police station on Sunday against unidentified persons.
Airport police station OC Kamrul Hasan Talukder said police had not arrested anyone yet but continued efforts to identify and apprehend those involved.
“We have not been able to arrest anyone so far. However, efforts are continuing. We are analyzing CCTV footage from the area,” he said.
According to relevant sources, DL Petrol Pump handles around Tk45 lakh to Tk50 lakh in transactions every day.
The pump usually sends the day’s sales proceeds to a bank for deposit between 10am and 10:30am.
Banks remain closed on Fridays and Saturdays, so the pump deposits the proceeds from both days together on the following working day, Sunday. As a result, employees carried a comparatively larger amount of cash from the pump to the bank on Sunday.
The employees were carrying the accumulated cash to the bank when the attackers intercepted them.
Taseen Akhter Haque Del is associated with the ownership of the establishment.
He is the younger son of Khurshid Jahan Haque, sister of late former prime minister Khaleda Zia and a former member of parliament and minister.
Police are analyzing CCTV footage from the area to identify the attackers and establish how they carried out the robbery.
