Protesters demanding the reinstatement of cancelled assistant teacher appointments at government primary schools continued their sit-in on Tuesday, on the road in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh in the capital, saying the demonstration will continue until their demands are met.
The protesters had previously blocked the Shahbagh intersection the previous day, demanding the appointment of 6,531 candidates in the third phase of recruitment for assistant teachers in government primary schools in Dhaka and Chittagong divisions.
During the protest, police charged batons to disperse them and used water cannons and sound grenades.
The protesters alleged that police obstructed their peaceful demonstration, injuring several teachers.
They claimed that some teachers were taken away and tortured by the police, who also used sound grenades and water cannons against them.
One protester mentioned around 2pm on Tuesday that they might receive "good news" soon, adding: "We will speak in detail then."
According to a press release from the protesters, the third-phase recruitment circular was published on June 14, 2023.
After the written and viva examinations, the results were announced on October 31, with 6,531 candidates passing.
However, after a few individuals filed writ petitions challenging the recruitment, the appointment process for all 6,531 candidates was suspended for six months.
Later, on February 6, the High Court ruled to cancel their appointments.
