Traffic snarls across Dhaka as Shahbagh and Jahangir Gate blocked

The shutdown at these two key points has caused severe traffic jams on other roads in the capital

Update : 29 Dec 2024, 02:54 PM

On one side are former members of the armed forces staging a sit-in, while on the other, doctors have blocked the roads, resulting in massive traffic congestion in Dhaka.

Since Sunday morning, former armed forces personnel and their families have been protesting in front of Jahangir Gate on the Farmgate-Mohakhali road. Meanwhile, postgraduate trainee doctors blocked Shahbagh intersection.

The shutdown at these two key points has caused severe traffic jams on other roads in the capital, causing extreme suffering for school, college, and office-goers.

The blockade at Jahangir Gate has led to traffic queues stretching from Banani past Zia Colony and, on the other side, reaching Mirpur’s Kalshi.

Traffic movement from Matikata Check Post to Banani and Uttara is also completely halted.

Former members of the armed forces, who were dismissed or forced into retirement during the Awami League government, began their program with a human chain in the morning and then staged a sit-in on the road. Their family members and relatives also joined the protest.

Meanwhile, postgraduate trainee doctors have been agitating for a hike in allowances for some time. In response to their demands, the government increased the allowance from Tk25,000 to Tk30,000 last week.

However, the trainee doctors rejected this decision, demanding an increase to Tk50,000. In pursuit of this demand, they blocked Shahbagh intersection at noon.
