A man and woman were killed after being struck by a covered van while crossing the road at Kajla in the capital's Jatrabari area, on Friday.
Their identities are yet to be confirmed, but it is suspected that they were husband and wife.
Confirming the matter, Sub-Inspector (SI) Kawsar Hossain of Jatrabari police station, citing local sources, said that the covered van hit them while they were crossing the road near the pocket gate of the Kajla petrol pump.
The van fled the scene after the accident.
The woman died on the spot, and her body has been kept at Mitford Hospital.
The man succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
SI Kawsar further said that efforts are underway to identify the offending covered van and ascertain the victims' identities.
The deceased man was wearing a white kurta-pajama, while the woman was dressed in a black burqa.
