Students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) organized a protest rally and brief assembly to oppose the appointment of filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki to the advisory council of the interim government.
Students began assembling at Bot Tola around 10:30pm on Sunday.
They initiated a protest rally, proceeding to Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall, and finally returning to Bot Tola for the closing assembly.
The assembly was led by Towhid Siam, coordinator of the JU chapter of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, during which students voiced their concerns.
Nazmul Hasan Limon, an anthropology student, said: “Including someone who is sympathetic to the fascist ideology that exploited Mujib and Mujibism to establish fascist rule and commit genocide is a betrayal of the martyrs’ blood.”
Emran Shahriar, a marketing student, commented: “We installed this government at the cost of nearly 2,000 brothers’ blood. The task now is to free the country from fascism. Those responsible for injuring and martyring my brothers must be swiftly brought to justice. If any attempt is made to rehabilitate fascist collaborators, we will respond firmly.”
Mehrab Sifat, a student from the 49th batch at the Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture, said: “The government we achieved through the blood of martyrs represents our hope for major change in the country. At this crucial time for national unity, the appointment of Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, a known sympathizer of fascism, as an advisor is unacceptable. We do not wish to see any promoters of fascism, who have praised it for the past 16 years, in power. Only individuals who are tested and trusted should be given responsibilities.”
