Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd has formed a seven-member investigation committee following an 11-hour suspension of metro rail services between Agargaon and Motijheel on Wednesday.
Mohammad Abdur Rouf, managing director of DMTCL, which operates the metro rail, shared the information with the media on Thursday.
The committee, led by DMTCL Director (Planning and Development) Md Abdul Baki Mia, would work to identify the cause behind the prolonged suspension, including bearing pad displacement, Rouf said, adding that the body had been asked to submit a report within five working days.
The metro rail service on the Agargaon-Motijheel section was suspended on Wednesday morning due to "unavoidable circumstances."
Later, it came to light that a spring had become dislodged from a viaduct, causing a risk to metro rail operations.
One of the four springs on a pillar near Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital by Farmgate station had shifted. This displacement caused an uneven alignment in that section of the route.
Rouf said at the time that there was a technical issue, and work was underway to resolve it.
He added that the viaduct had four springs in that section, and the displacement of one spring had been identified through visual inspection. “Although trains could still operate, it posed a risk. Therefore, the issue needed to be resolved before resuming operations to ensure passenger safety.”
Meanwhile, regular passengers faced difficulties throughout the day due to the suspension.
Many had to wait for long hours under the Agargaon metro station for alternative transport.
DMTCL later announced that after resolving the technical issue, metro rail operations resumed from Uttara North to Motijheel at 8:25pm, before apologizing for the inconvenience caused to the passengers.
