Metro rail services in Dhaka are operating without stopping at three stations following a request from police amid clashes between garment workers and law enforcement.
Since Sunday afternoon, trains have been bypassing Pallabi, Mirpur-11 and Mirpur-10 stations, Md Nazrul Islam, director (operations and maintenance) of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL), confirmed to Bangla Tribune.
He said train services at the three stations had been suspended following a clash between garment workers and police around noon.
Meanwhile, a police vehicle was reportedly set on fire in the Mirpur-11 area. Hamidur Rahman, a duty officer at the Fire Service, said two firefighting units had been sent to the scene.
Police also fired tear gas shells to disperse workers in the Mirpur-10 area.
Earlier, hundreds of workers from different garment factories took to the streets around 9am, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000. The protest brought traffic in Mirpur to a standstill.
Workers and police clashed in a series of confrontations, including chases and counter-chases.
Around 11am, police charged batons and fired tear gas shells to disperse protesters in the Mirpur-10 area. Some workers were also seen throwing bricks and stones during the clashes.
