Police recovered several bomb-like objects from beneath the Motijheel Metro Rail Station in the capital and safely defused them on Friday.
The matter was confirmed at around 8:30pm by Abdul Salam, investigation officer of Motijheel Police Station.
According to police, the bomb disposal unit of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) defused 2 suspicious objects. The area was cordoned off while members of law enforcement agencies collected evidence from the scene.
Abdul Salam said police received information shortly after 7pm that bomb-like objects had been placed beneath the Motijheel Metro Rail Station. Officers from the local police station and the CTTC bomb disposal unit then rushed to the scene.
He said: “So far, 2 bomb-like objects have been rendered safe.”
According to sources familiar with the development, the recovered objects appeared to be improvised explosive devices (IEDs) fitted with circuits and batteries.
The sources said each device contained approximately 1-1.5kg of sulfur packed inside a pipe, commonly known as a pipe bomb, along with numerous small iron balls intended to act as shrapnel. They also claimed the device could have detonated if a button concealed in an umbrella had been pressed.
