Eid-ul-Azha is being celebrated across Bangladesh, and the trading of sacrificial animal rawhides has already started. However, seasonal traders who are selling rawhides to wholesalers report that they are not receiving the expected prices for the rawhides, while buyers say that the prices are quite high this year.

The situation was observed at temporary hide markets at various locations such as Nawabpur Road, Dholai Khal Mor, and Dayaganj in the capital.

Large cowhides are being sold for Tk600-800, and medium and small hides for Tk500-600. Sellers are saying that they are not receiving the expected prices for the hides. Meanwhile, buyers are saying that even though the cost and supply of salt are stable, other expenses are high, forcing them to purchase rawhides at low prices.

A madrasa teacher, Abdullah Kamal, collecting rawhides from various neighbourhoods in the capital, told Dhaka Tribune that rawhide prices are comparatively lower this year than last year. Nevertheless, he hopes to sell at reasonably good prices.

However, he said that if traders form a syndicate and lower the prices like every year, then fair prices will not be obtained. "So far this morning, I have collected 180 cowhides and 50 hides of goats. I hope to collect 250 rawhides in the remaining time,” he said.

Numerous mobile rawhide purchasing centres have been set up throughout the capital.

From morning to evening, seasonal traders and retail sellers have brought rawhides of sacrificial animals from various areas of the capital. Earlier, they were seen purchasing rawhides by visiting different neighbourhoods.

Md Noyon Mia, a mobile hide trader on Nawabpur Road, said: "For the past 20 years during the Eid-ul-Azha period, I have been collecting and selling rawhides to tannery owners. This year, the tannery owners have set the rawhide prices, so no rawhide sells above Tk250 to Tk1,000. The number of rawhides coming in is comparatively lower than last year. However, it is too early to discuss profit or loss; we will do the calculations after we have preserved the rawhides with salt."
