Update : 12 Jun 2024, 05:11 PM

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam has said animal waste generated during Eid-ul-Azha will be removed from the streets within six hours, while DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has announced that his area will be cleaned up within 24 hours.

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam was speaking at a ceremony marking the addition of 32 dump trucks and eight compactors for waste management to the DNCC fleet in the capital’s Gabtoli on Wednesday.

“In 2023, waste from sacrificial animals during Eid was removed from the streets within eight hours. This time it will be even quicker,” Atiqul said.

“This time, our goal is to remove animal waste within six hours. The addition of the 40 new trucks will accelerate the process,” he added.

"Over 10,000 workers will be on duty. Approximately 1.04 million polythene bags are being distributed. Bleaching powder, baskets, phenyl, etc have been distributed in sufficient quantities. Councillors and DNCC staff will work around the clock," the mayor said.

Meanwhile, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh made his promise in front of reporters while inspecting the preparations for the National Eidgah on Wednesday morning.

The DSCC mayor said: “Every year, we aim to dispose of waste within 24 hours. So the waste generated on Eid day will be removed within 24 hours, and the waste generated the next day will likewise be collected within 24 hours.”

"We used our funds to acquire 35 fresh vehicles for our workforce. We have already commissioned 25 10-ton vehicles, and 10 payloaders to remove dirt have been added. About 15 additional vehicles are being added. In short, our vehicle fleet is vast,” he added.

He expressed hope that the DSCC will be able to provide service more smoothly than last time and provide more benefits to the people of Dhaka.

Last year, the Dhaka north and south city corporations announced the removal of 41,000 tons of waste within 48 hours during Eid-ul-Azha.

The DNCC removed 22,387 tons of rubbish and the DSCC 18,852 tons, according to city corporation authorities.

Both mayors urged city residents not to dispose of waste wherever it is convenient.
