Law enforcement officers are on the alert at Naya Paltan and adjoining areas to prevent any untoward incident as a BNP is set to hold a rally program on Friday.
Security has been strengthened in the areas.
Since Thursday morning, more than 150 policemen have been deployed on the main road next to the central office of BNP. Policemen were also seen positioned in a side street.
However, the Naya Paltan area is almost empty now.
Mehedi Hasan/Dhaka TribuneBNP leaders and activists started gathering in the morning.
At one stage, they left the headquarters after police requested them to leave the place as DMP hasn't allowed the party to hold rallies on the roads.
Police were deployed in front of the BNP office since Wednesday afternoon due to this program.
Armoured vehicles with prison vans are kept beside the policemen.
Mehedi Hasan/Dhaka TribuneMeanwhile, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi urged BNP leaders and activists not to roam around unnecessarily in the Nayapaltan area.
The BNP had planned to hold their rally at Naya Paltan or Suhrawardy Uddyan on Wednesday but the DMP did not give them permission to use either venue.
Police suggested they consider the Golapbagh field where the party held its grand rally on December 10 last year.
Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the new date during a press conference after a meeting with senior leaders of the party last night that the rally will be held on Friday. The rally will be held after the Jummah prayer at Naya Paltan.
