Gulistan blast: DB picks up business owner for questioning

The DB chief says they are conducting investigation to see whose negligence caused the incident

The Detective Branch (DB) of police picked up the owner of a shop that collapsed after the deadly explosion in the capital's Siddikbazar on Tuesday. 

The businessman's name is Abdul Motaleb Mintu.

Mintu's sister-in-law Abul Khair said on Wednesday afternoon: “Around 3am on Wednesday, Mintu was picked up from the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Mintu went to the hospital to check on the employees of his shop. His shop has completely collapsed.”

Wishing to remain anonymous, a DB source told Bangla Tribune that a team from the Lalbagh division of the DB picked up Mintu. At present DB is in Mintu Road office. 

He is being interrogated as the explosion occurred right under his shop in the basement, he said. 

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Detective) Harun-ur-Rashid said: "We have not arrested anyone. I have called house owners, shop owners for questioning. We are also talking to those who have been injured.”

He further said: "We want to know why there were shops set up in the basement flouting regulations. Also, we will investigate whether the sewage line, septic tank, water reservoir were regularly maintained. I am inquiring to know whose negligence caused this incident. Besides, we are investigating whether someone from outside has done it or there is an opportunity to do it.”

At least 19 people were killed after an explosion ripped through a commercial building in the capital's Gulistan area on Tuesday. More than 100 people were injured in the blast.
