The fire service has recovered the body of a man from a 20-storey building following a fire that broke out there late Thursday.
The deceased had yet to be identified, Fire Service and Civil Defence Director (Operations and Maintainance) Lt Col Md Tajul Islam Chowdhury told reporters in the early hours of Friday, adding that smoke inhalation was the likely cause of his death.
Twenty-three people had been carried down to safety from different floors of the building, he said.
"We believe that the fire may have started from the electrical duct. Fires usually occur from short circuits in duct lines. We will be able to identify the origin of the fire after investigation."
"The fire service thinks that the deceased died due to smoke inhalation. We left no stone unturned in trying to save him after finding him on the 18th floor while searching the building," the fire service director added.
He continued: "Although there was a reservoir, there were no points for withdrawing water from it. All of them were inactive. We look into whether the building had a safety plan; apparently, there was one but it has not been implemented."
The fire service received information about the fire at 11:25pm on Thursday, and 13 firefighting units managed to bring the flames under control at 2:04am on Friday.
