The High Court has asked three hospital authorities to explain the death of twin newborns within 48 hours. The twins died on Monday, allegedly due to the negligence of the hospital authorities.
The three hospitals in question are Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital, Islami Bank Hospital in Mugda, Dhaka, and Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital.
The court also issued a rule asking why the inaction of the defendants in the medical negligence of the twins would not be considered illegal.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohail issued the order on Monday, reports Bangla Tribune.
Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik confirmed the matter. He said that Supreme Court staff Md Abul Kalam Azad's wife Saira Khatun had fallen ill and given birth to two babies in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on her way to Islami Bank Hospital in Mugda on Monday morning.

Upon their arrival, the hospital authorities informed them they did not have adequate arrangements to treat the newborns and asked for the babies to be taken to Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital in Shyamoli.
When the babies were taken to Dhaka Shishu Hospital via ambulance, the authorities informed the couple that the intensive care unit (ICU) was occupied and that the newborns would have to be admitted on normal beds costing Tk5,000 per child per day.
A distressed Abul Kalam Azad discussed the matter with a High Court judge, who suggested that he take the newborns to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital and to contact the director in order to receive urgent attention.
When he reached the hospital, Azad was once again dismayed to find that the director was busy attending a meeting. After waiting for some time he was informed that the director had gone home for the day.
Eventually, a personal staff member of the director arranged for a doctor to have a look at the newborns inside the ambulance. Upon inspection, he declared the babies dead.
Outraged at the chain of incidents leading to the death of his children, Abul Kalam Azad brought their bodies to the court premises, seeking justice.
