The government has amended the anti-rape law and included death penalty for rape

Update : 13 Oct 2020, 03:34 PM

Describing rapists as “beasts,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said the government had to induct the death sentence in the relevant law to save girls from them.

“The rapists are [like] beasts as they exhibit their inhumane nature affecting our girls… we have amended the law and included capital punishment for rape… we have cleared the amendment [proposal] in the cabinet," she said at a program marking the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2020.

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief arranged the event at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka. The prime minister attended it via videoconference from her official residence, Ganabhaban.

She said as parliament was not in session now, the government was promulgating an ordinance to make the amendment effective.

“It is our aim to face any problem when it arises and resolve that,” she added.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s strong remarks came as protests against the growing incidents of rape, sexual harassment and violence against women are continuing in different parts of the country.

International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

The theme of this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2020 is “Disaster risk governance,” while the theme for Bangladesh has been fixed as “Good Governance in Reduce Disaster Risk, Ensure Sustainable Development.”

The prime minister also inaugurated newly-built 17,005 disaster resilience houses virtually and induction of volunteers, and unveiled the cover of a book titled “Standing Orders of Disaster.”
