Garment worker gang-raped in Gazipur, case filed at police station

The accused have been on the run since the incident, and police are continuing their efforts to arrest them, says an official

A 35-year-old female garment worker has filed a case over being gang-raped in turns in Sreepur, Gazipur.

The case, which names three individuals from the same village as the accused, was filed by the survivor at Sreepur police station on Saturday, according to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Barek of Sreepur police station.

The incident took place in the deep Gojari forest of Nantu Potka village in Goshinga union of Sreepur upazila around 11:30pm on Tuesday night, the OC said.

The survivor has been sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for a medical examination on Saturday, the OC added.

The accused are: Alamin, 27, son of Said Ali; Shanto, 25, son of Saiful Islam; and Sumon, 26, son of Montaz Uddin, all from Nantu Potka village in Goshinga union.

Around 11pm on Tuesday, she left work and began returning home in a battery-run auto-rickshaw. At around 11:30pm, she got off near a shop adjacent to a local factory in Nantu Potka village and started walking home.

As she walked past the shop, the accused, who were waiting, grabbed her and gagged her with a piece of cloth when she screamed, and took her into the deep forest, where they allegedly gang-raped her in turns until dawn.

Before releasing her in the early morning, they threatened her to remain silent about the incident.

Nayon Kar, the OC of Sreepur police station and the investigating officer of the case, said the accused have been on the run since the incident, and police are continuing their efforts to arrest them.
