Bangladesh Police Headquarters in Dhaka on Tuesday held a programme to pay homage to those who were killed and injured in Operation Sun Devil in Godagari in Rajshahi.
The event ended with tears and questions from the affected families.
“My husband was the only source of income in the family. We have two children. His three brothers and mother also live with us. He used to bear the family's cost and pay for our children's education. Now that he is no more, how will I run the family?”
This is what Tanjila Begum, the widow of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense’s fireman Md Abdul Motin, told the Dhaka Tribune when she came to receive the honorarium money at the event.
His two children and brothers were also present at the ceremony.
Tanjila, expressing grave concern about meeting ends to continue her children's education, said: “If anyone from the family is given a job, then we can survive in some way and the children can continue their education.”
The children currently study in class 9 and 6.
While commending the support from the Fire Services Department, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque said: “Many of our members are being killed and injured in such drives, and we need to learn from previous mistakes and be careful when trying to protect people.”
At the ceremony, the IGP gave Tk10 lakh to deceased Md Abdul Motin's family, of which Tk7 lakh was given to Motin's wife and Tk3 lakh to Motin's mother.
On May 11 and 12, Bogra, Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi district police conducted a combined anti-militancy drive at Godagari termed Operation Sun Devil, and recovered 11 bombs, one pistol, two bullets and one magazine from the militant hideout.
During the drive, before killing themselves by detonating suicide vests, the militants hacked firefighter Abdul Motin to death.
Police also gave honorarium to five policemen who sustained injures from the suicide blast.
