Drive against Seating, Gate Lock services suspended after only three days

Update : 20 Apr 2017, 12:34 AM
The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has suspended their drive to stop Seating Service and Gate Lock Service in Dhaka's public buses for 15 days only three days after launch. The road transport authorities  made the announcement after a meeting with the owners of Seating Service buses at the BRTA head office in Dhaka on Wednesday evening. However, the BRTA will continue inspecting buses to see if the passengers are getting overcharged, they added. Earlier on Sunday, the BRTA launched the drive in Dhaka to stop Seating Service and Gate Lock Service in public buses to stop bus owners from charging the passengers extra fare, after consulting with the Dhaka Sarak Paribahan Samity, the association of passenger bus owners in the capital city.

The decision was originally made by the bus owners themselves, who agreed on April 4 that Seating Service and Gate Lock Service should be suspended. Speaking to the reporters following the meeting, BRTA Chairman Moshiar Rahman said because of the drive, both commuters and bus service providers were facing trouble. “That is why we have decided to suspend the drive for 15 days. However, the BRTA will continue checking the buses to see if they are following the BRTA fare chart,” he said. During this suspension, the BRTA will look into alternative solutions that would benefit both the commuters and the bus service owners, Moshiar added.

However, Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association Secretary General Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said the BRTA was backtracking from their decision because they were being pressured to do so by the bus service owners, who are quite influential.
