The permanent official passes for Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) president and general secretary for Ganabhaban, the prime minister’s residence, have been suspended.
Ganabhaban sources said the decision was taken on Monday to suspend passes of BCL President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and General Secretary Golam Rabbani following the prime minister’s instructions.
Earlier on Saturday, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed dissatisfaction with BCL top brass during a meeting of the Local Government Nomination Board.
A former minister, currently a presidium member, said the prime minister at one point of the meeting was so furious that she said she would dissolve the Chhatra League central committee.
Sources at the meeting said a joint general secretary raised the issue of Chhatra League President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon using VIP protocol during his visit to Sylhet.
He also criticized Shovon, and Golam Rabbani, general secretary of Chhatra League, for their laziness.
The leader also pointed out that controversial activities by the Chhatra League top brass are tainting the party’s image.
A presidium member, wishing anonymity, told Dhaka Tribune that one of the joint secretaries was unhappy with the two Chhatra League leaders as they had failed to set up the Kushtia district Chhatra League committee as per his instructions.
During the meeting, other leaders, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader pointed out several allegations of bribes taken for approving unit committees.
Earlier in the day, Obaidul Quader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself is looking into the matter involving incumbent president and general secretary of the Chhatra League.
"Any amendment or change to the Chhatra League will be handled by the prime minister herself," he told reporters at the Secretariat on Wednesday, reports UNB.
Asked about the upcoming council of the Chhatra League, he said: "There has been no decision about it as yet. It is an internal matter of the party."
