Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has announced an extensive anti-mosquito drive into households and organizations from Tuesday.
DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam made the announcement after inspecting Dhaka's Mohakhali central bus terminal Monday noon.
"Any household or organization found to have favourable conditions for mosquito breeding will be warned. There will be a second inspection after 15 days, and will result in a fine or jail time if no changes are observed," the mayor said.
The drive will commence from 10am on Tuesday from the city’sGulshan area, ward number 19 of the DNCC.
Earlier on Monday, the mayor inspected the Mohakhali bus terminal. During the visit, he found abandoned tyres at open places and ordered the magistrate to fine the bus owners Tk500,000, and to take other necessary steps according to the law.
He also gave his commitment to clean the canal near the bus terminal.
A record 50,000 people have been hospitalized with dengue this year, according to data provided by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Although the official dengue death toll from the DGHS stands at 40, the unofficial count from media reports is over 100.
