Update : 08 May 2019, 11:03 PM

A service pistol and 16 bullet rounds were allegedly stolen from the Shahbagh police station's restroom on Sunday.

Shahbagh Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Himangshu Saha, custodian of the weapon, has also been temporarily suspended for carelessness.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Maruf Hasan Sarder, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) deputy commissioner for the Ramna Division, said: "We suspect that the weapon and bullets were stolen. A case has been filed in this regard."

He also said they were trying to recover the stolen weapon and ammunition.

"We are trying to identify the suspects and bring them to justice," Maruf added.

Police sources said, on Sunday, ASI Himangshu had gone to the station restroom after completing his duty. Later, Himangshu claimed that he could not find his service pistol and 16 bullet rounds.

Despite a thorough search of the station, police could not find the stolen items, said sources.

On January 11 last year, two service pistols and 32 bullet rounds were stolen from Mirpur's Moddho Pirerbagh area from Sergeants Mamunur Rashid and Sohel Rana, members of the western zone of DMP Traffic Division.

Later on March 16, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Jalal Uddin was killed while trying to recover the stolen weapons and ammunition.

The accused, Hasan, was then killed in a "gunfight" with DB on March 23 in Mirpur.  Three guns, including two pistols, were recovered from the spot.
