Update : 19 Aug 2018, 01:11 AM

After having arrested 8 hijackers from New Market and Jatrabari area in Dhaka on Friday, police found that they have created a “ Hijackers Welfare Fund” to help finance their case proceedings and medical expenses.

During the primary interrogation of the eight men—Sajjad Hossain alias Shagor, Ali Hasan, Sobuj Biswash, Roky alias Nurujjaman, Liton Miah, Mukta Begum, Baby Akter and Nupur alias Jhumur, police were able to get this information from them, confirmed Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch Additional Commissioner Abdul Baten, yesterday.

Baten said: “A portion of their hijacked money was kept aside for the fund which we recovered Tk8,00,000 from Shagor’s house. They kept the money with his wife for safety.”

However, police did not disclose the identity of Shagor’s wife nor arrest her because they do not think she was involved with the crime.

“Sagor lied to his wife saying he has a regular job and was keeping his salary with her instead of opening a bank account,” the additional commissioner said. Adding that if found guilty, actions will be taken against her.

During their interrogation, Baten said the gang confessed to stealing mobile phone and money from busy areas full of malls and shopping market ahead of Eid.

The group is also active year round, with Baten saying: “They have so far collectively robbed people of Tk400,000 to 5,00,000 every month. They use the microbus as a fast getaway car.”

Two separate cases have been filed against the accused in Jatrabari and New Market, he said.

Police seized one microbus, one machete, two knives and 12 mobile phones from the gang during the time of arrest.

57 members of dope gang held

Detective Branch (DB) of Police also detained 57 suspected members of “Aggyan parties,” or dope gangs from different parts of Dhaka.

As part of the crackdown on crime, detectives detained them in the last twenty four hours. DB also recover 553 sedatives, 7 pieces ‘molom’ and 7 bottles of liquid poison from them.

Aggyan parties, or dope gangs, rob their victims after drugging them into unconsciousness with often fatal consequences.
