The body of an unidentified man was found near Benapole border, while a shirt, believed to be his, was seen hanging on the border fence on Wednesday.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and locals said Bangladeshi peasants noticed a body in Zero line area near pillar number 3 around 5pm.
They informed police and BGB of the incident. But Benapole port police did not recover the body, as it was lying in Indian territory.
Benapole BGB informed it to its higher authorities, who talked to Indian Border Security Force (BSF) about the incident.
Later, Indian police took the body around 9pm.
Benapole port police, BGB and Petrapole BSF visited the spot but could not ascertain the identity of the body.
Benapole BGB Camp Commander Nayek Subedar Gias Uddin said the identity of the deceased was unknown.
“We informed higher officials of the matter,” said Gias.
Benapole BGB Camp Nayeb Subedar Nazrul Islam said BGB members informed BSF of the fact after it was confirmed that the body was lying in Indian territory.
