A General Diary (GD) has been filed at Shahbagh Police Station against actress Meher Afroz Shaon, actress Mahia Mahi and a woman named Shanta Farzana over allegations of insulting and spreading propaganda against the July uprising.

The GD was filed on Friday by Rashtra Sanglap Forum. Shahbagh police said the complaint has been forwarded to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) Cyber Crime Division for investigation.

Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman said the GD was filed over alleged online remarks insulting the July uprising.

"As it is a cyber-related matter, it has been sent to the DB Cyber Crime Division for investigation," he told Dhaka Tribune.

According to the GD, the complaint was filed by Rashtra Sanglap Forum central member secretaries Anam Ayas and Tuhin Farazi, along with central chief organizer Muhammad Shah Alam Badsha.

The complainants said the July Movement became a significant chapter in Bangladesh's history through the sacrifices of more than 1,400 martyrs and over 30,000 injured people. They alleged that several individuals had recently made derogatory remarks and engaged in activities disrespecting the movement and its memorials.

The GD alleged that Shanta Farzana posted a video on Facebook showing shoes being thrown at or striking the July memorial, which the complainants described as disrespectful to the memory of the martyrs and capable of provoking public outrage.

It also alleged that Shaon, in several videos posted on social media, portrayed the July uprising as a planned or staged event and made derogatory remarks about the state and the movement.

The complaint further alleged that Mahi made social media posts mocking individuals and organizations involved in the uprising by comparing them to actors, which the complainants said demeaned those who participated in the movement.

The complainants requested police to investigate the allegations and take necessary legal action in accordance with existing laws.

The student movement that began in 2024 demanding quota reforms later evolved into an anti-government movement, culminating in the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5.
