The International Crimes Tribunal has ordered Awami League leader Tanzir Ahmed Rajib to appear before it on November 27 in connection with a crimes against humanity case filed over the killing of three people in Gouripur, Mymensingh, during the anti-discrimination student movement in July–August.
The order was issued on Wednesday by the International Crimes Tribunal-2, chaired by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.
Prosecutor Saimum Reza Talukder represented the prosecution at the hearing and sought a production warrant for Rajib. The tribunal granted the request and directed the prison authorities to produce him before the court.
According to the prosecution, Rajib — known locally as an Awami “terror leader” — is currently in prison in connection with another case. However, evidence has reportedly linked him to the killings in Gouripur during the July–August 2024 movement, prompting the request for his production before the tribunal.
Sources said Rajib served as the general secretary of the Mymensingh District Swechchhasebak League in 2022. He is the son of former MP Nazim Uddin Ahmed, who represented the Mymensingh-3 (Gouripur) constituency.
Earlier, on September 28, Tribunal-2 directed investigators to submit a report within two months against former sub-inspector Shafiqul Alam of Gouripur Police Station and other accused in the same case. The tribunal also set November 27 for the next hearing.
Besides SI Shafiqul, the other accused are former assistant sub-inspector Delwar Hossain, local Awami League leader Shahabul Alam, and activists Joseph Uddin Joz and Ataur Rahman Fakir, also known as Faruk Ahmed.
During the July uprising in Gouripur, three people — Biplob Hasan, Md Nure Alam Siddiqui, and Md Zubair — were killed in attacks allegedly carried out by police and leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
Numerous students and civilians were also injured. Following these incidents, a case was filed with the International Crimes Tribunal, accusing several individuals of crimes against humanity.
