Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Friday said he instructed police to take action against Sikder Group Managing Director Ron Haque Sikder as per the law.
"I have directed police to take action as per the law. No special law would be applied to them [Sikder brothers]. Whatever the rules are, will be applied," he said as reported by Prothom Alo.
The Detective Branch arrested Ron Haque Sikder from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday morning.
Ron, who has been a fugitive in an attempted murder case filed by the Exim Bank, came to Dhaka just two days after his father Zainul Haque Sikder, chairman of Sikder Group of Companies and National Bank Limited, passed away at a Dubai hospital on Wednesday.
Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner (Gulshan division) of DB police, told the media that Ron, who has been shown arrested in the case, was taken to the DB office on Minto Road after his arrest.
Police said his brother Dipu Haque Sikder, another accused in the case is still absconding.
On May 7, 2020, Ron and Dipu allegedly tortured and attempted to murder Exim Bank Managing Director Md Haider Ali Mia and Additional Managing Director Md Firoz Hossain.
They shot at the Exim Bank officials at Sikder House in Dhaka's Banani when the bankers refused to overvalue their mortgaged property for a Tk500 crore loan.
On May 19 last year, a case was filed in this connection with Gulshan police station.
National Bank Limited, a concern of the Sikder Group, denied the allegations through their lawyer, saying the case was filed to socially defame them.
The brothers took a private air ambulance of R&R Aviation, another Sikder Group concern, and left the country on May 25.
