An assistant sub-inspector of river police, who was convicted in the much-talked-about Narayanganj seven-murder incident, was arrested yesterday from his workplace in Barisal's Hijla upazila.
Interestingly, he continued in the police department for two and half months after his conviction.
A team of Naria police booked the ASI, Habibur Rahman, from Hijla river police outpost, where he was the in-charge.
Police sources said Habibur was the bodyguard of the then commanding officer of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-11) Tareque Sayeed in 2014.
Habibur had then been posted in RAB as a constable in Narayanganj, but was later promoted to ASI and finally was transferred to the river police outpost, sources confirmed.
He is among nine convicts who were sentenced to jail terms ranging from nine to 17 years over the politically-motivated killings of seven people in the district.

Hijla police station's Officer-in-Charge AZM Masuduzzaman told the Dhaka Tribune that Habibur was sentenced to 27 years over two charges regarding the murders.
Meanwhile, Barisal Superintendent of Police SM Aktaruzzaman, replying to a query about Habibur continuing his job despite being convicted, answered that it is the River Police who were responsible for taking action against Habibur.
“He kept the matter of his sentence secret and cunningly managed to keep his superiors in the dark about the matter,” the SP added.
However, the local SP of River Police could not be reached over phone, despite repeated attempts for his comments in this regard.
As of 9pm, Habibur was being taken to Naria upazila.
On January 16, a Narayanganj court sentenced local Awami League leader and city councillor Nur Hossain, sacked RAB officer of Tareque Sayeed, sacked Lt Commander Masud Rana, sacked Maj Arif Hossain and 22 others to death for the politically-motivated killings of seven people in Narayanganj in 2014.
