Police has held a man as he was selling his teenage daughter in a brothel of Daulatdia in Rajbari district.
The detainee was identified as Ershad Ali, 35, a rickshaw puller of Hosenpur village in Manda upazila. The police also arrested a prostitute, Shilpi, 35, who was buying the girl from him on Sunday.
Police said the 13 year old victim was Ershad's daughter from his first marriage which ended in divorce.
The girl's mother also remarried and was unable to take responsibility for her.
She was staying at various relatives' houses, including her grandmother and aunt.
Ershad, who was a regular client at the brothel, told the girl he was going to take care of her in a rented house in Dhaka, all the while actually planning to sell her for Tk30,000.
Under pretense of taking her to Dhaka, Ershad took the girl to the brothel, where a police team, acting on a tip-off, rescued the girl and arrested both Ershad and Shilpi.
Even after being rescued, the victim girl apologized for her father's act and pleaded for his release, said OC of Goalanda Terminal Police, Md Ezaz Shafi.
SI Oliar Rahman of Goalanda Terminal Police, filed a case in this regard.
“Application will be filed before the local court seeking permission to keep the girl in a safe home as she has no guardians,” he said.
