Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-1) arrested two alleged drug dealers along with 107 bottles of foreign liquor during an anti-narcotics drive in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur. The liquor is estimated to be worth around Tk 4 lakh. A pickup truck used to transport the contraband was also seized.
RAB-1’s Porabari Camp Senior Assistant Director (Media) Captain Iftekhar Ahmed confirmed the matter on Friday.
The detainees were identified as Ashraful Alam, 22, a pickup driver and son of Liton Mia from Charshihari village, and Shamim Mia, 24, son of Abdur Rashid from Paikura (Borohit) village—both residents of Ishwarganj upazila in Mymensingh.
According to RAB, acting on a tip-off around 11:30am on Thursday, they learned that a pickup truck carrying a large consignment of foreign liquor was heading from Netrokona to the Chandra area of Kaliakair. Based on the information, a RAB team set up a checkpoint in front of Shaha Plaza on the Chandra-Dainkini road in the Nagarardal area.
At around 12:30pm, the suspicious vehicle was stopped and searched, leading to the arrest of the driver and his associate.
Officer-in-Charge of Kaliakair Police Station, Khandakar Nasir Uddin, said the detainees were sent to jail through a court on Friday afternoon in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
