HC stays DU senate meeting on VC panel election

Update : 25 Jul 2017, 02:08 PM
The High Court has stayed a senate meeting of Dhaka University, scheduled for on July 29, to select a panel of three candidates for the post of vice-chancellor. A High Court bench passed the order on Sunday after taking into cognisance a writ petition filed by 15 registered graduates asking for the stay on the meeting. The court also issued a rule asking the university authorities to why the meeting should not be declared illegal or beyond the authority of the senate. The vice-chancellor, pro-vice chancellor (education), pro-vice chancellor (administration), register and the education secretary were made respondents to the rule. On July 16, Dhaka University's Register sent letters to the Senate members for an especial meeting to discuss about the vice-chancellor's election. In the letter, the vice-chancellor with the powers conferred on the University Ordinance, convened a special meeting of the senate at 4pm on July 29. On the same day, the registered graduates filed a writ petition asking for the stay order on the notice that called the senate meeting. The senate members elect a panel of three candidates for the post of vice-chancellor and the president, who is also the chancellor of Bangladesh's universities, and appoints one of them as vice-chancellor of Dhaka University. As per the Dhaka University Order 1973, the senate meeting for choosing the vice-chancellor candidates must contain 25 registered graduates along with representatives of teachers and students. The senate should also have at least 99 members. However, the senate called the special meeting without nominating all the registered graduates. Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique tenure will end on August 24. Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud appeared for the petitioners, while AFM Mesbahuddin argued for DU.
