Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) programmer Kaushik Debnath was sent to jail on Monday after surrendering before a Dhaka court in a case over the alleged leaking of BCS examination questions.
Kaushik surrendered before Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir and sought bail.
His lawyer Advocate Md Shariful Islam argued that the allegations against his client in the FIR and charge sheet were “completely false, baseless and fabricated”, and that he was not involved in the incident.
After hearing the arguments, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered that Kaushik be sent to jail, said court bench assistant Md Riaz Hossain.
Kaushik had obtained a six-week bail from the High Court on July 7 and was directed to surrender before the trial court. He surrendered accordingly on Monday.
CID Sub-Inspector Nippon Chandra Chanda filed the case with Paltan Model Police Station on July 8, 2024, under the Bangladesh Public Service Commission Act. The case named 31 people and accused 50–60 unidentified individuals.
Following an investigation, CID Additional Superintendent of Police Suman Kumar Saha submitted a charge sheet on May 18 against 55 people, including alleged question-leak syndicate kingpin Abed Ali.
According to the charge sheet, the syndicate provided selected candidates with examination questions and answers before the tests. Candidates were taken to designated locations and made to memorise the questions and answers before being sent to examination centres on the day of the exams.
The syndicate allegedly collected large sums of money in advance from the candidates. The investigation found that the network operated across several districts and involved government employees, current and former PSC officials and staff, businesspeople, medical professionals, students and people from various other professions.
