A court in Jamalpur on Monday sentenced seven men to death for the gang rape of a housewife in Bakshiganj upazila, while acquitting another accused.
The court also fined each of the convicts Tk100,000.
Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 in Jamalpur pronounced the verdict at around 3pm in the presence of the accused.
The seven convicts are Pappu, Biju, Badsha, Jewel, Ashraful, Jasim, and Asmat. Another accused, Idris Ali, was acquitted. All are residents of different villages in Bakshiganj upazila of Jamalpur district.
Public prosecutor Fazlul Haque said the incident took place at around midnight on May 25, 2025, when the victim was traveling from Jhagarchar Bazar in Sherpur district to her rented home in Jankipur of Bakshiganj in an easy bike driven by Idris Ali.
According to the prosecution, the vehicle was stopped on the way, and the woman was forcibly transferred to a van by the accused.
She was then taken to the abandoned kitchen of a man named Farid in Nilakshia Uttarpara, where the accused allegedly raped her before fleeing the scene.
The following day, the victim filed a case with Bakshiganj Police Station, naming six accused and identifying another three to four people as unidentified suspects.
After an eight-month investigation, the investigating officer submitted the charge sheet on April 15 this year.
The tribunal delivered the verdict after recording the testimony of eight out of nine prosecution witnesses.
The prosecution was represented by Advocate Fazlul Haque, while the defense was represented by Advocate Md Mokammel Haque.
