A Dhaka court on Sunday rejected the bail petition of journalist Anis Alamgir in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order after a hearing.
Anis Alamgir’s lawyer Taslima Jahan Popy said they had sought bail for her client, but the court rejected the plea.
“We held a hearing seeking bail for Anis Alamgir. The court rejected the bail application. We will now discuss the next course of action. I will not go to the High Court; I will apply for bail here again,” she said.
A team of detectives from the Detective Branch (DB) police took Anis Alamgir to their office after 8pm on December 14, 2025, for questioning.
Later that night, Aryan Ahmed, a member of an organization called the July Revolutionary Alliance, filed a case against Alamgir and four others under the Anti-Terrorism Act, accusing them of conspiring to destabilize the state and inciting a banned organization.
The other accused in the case are actress Meher Afroz Shawon, fashion model Maria Kispatta and presenter Imtu Ratish Imtiaz.
Alamgir was later placed on a five-day remand in the case and sent to jail on December 20 after the remand period ended. He has remained in custody since then.
Meanwhile, the ACC filed a separate case against him on January 15, alleging that he had amassed illegal wealth.
On January 25, the investigation officer in the case, ACC Assistant Director Akhtaruzzaman, sought to show Alamgir arrested in the corruption case. The court later granted the request on January 28 after a hearing held in the presence of the accused.
According to the case statement, Alamgir allegedly acquired immovable assets worth Tk25 lakh and movable assets worth Tk38.4 lakh, bringing the total value of assets to Tk49 lakh.
The complaint also estimates family and other expenses at Tk15 lakh, bringing the total assets and expenditure to Tk42.5 lakh.
Investigators said Alamgir’s legitimate income sources amount to Tk99 lakh, including past savings of Tk54.45 lakh, Tk19.39 lakh from talk shows and consultancy, Tk22 lakh from plot sales, and Tk3.24 lakh from savings certificates and bank interest.
However, the investigation claims that assets worth Tk3.26 crore exceed his declared and acceptable income, which accounts for about 77% of his total acquired assets and is considered wealth beyond known sources of income.
Recently, the High Court granted bail to Anis Alamgir in the case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
