A Dhaka court has granted permanent bail to journalist Anis Alamgir in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Faiz issued the order on Thursday.
The court also rejected his application seeking exemption from personal appearance and directed him to appear in person.
His lawyer, Taslima Jahan Popy, confirmed the matter.
On the day of the hearing, Anis Alamgir appeared before the court as scheduled. He filed three separate petitions seeking permanent bail, exemption from personal appearance, and permission to travel abroad at any time.
After the hearing, the court rejected the plea for exemption from personal appearance but approved the other two petitions.
The ACC filed the case against Anis Alomgir on January 15 over allegations of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income and money laundering. Later, on January 25, an ACC assistant director sought to show him arrested in the case, which the court approved on January 28.
He was earlier granted bail in this case on March 11.
Separately, on December 14, a case was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, at Uttara West Police Station by Aryan Ahmed, an organiser of the July Revolutionary Alliance. After his arrest in that case, the court granted a five-day remand on December 15, and he was sent to jail on December 20. He later secured bail from the High Court on March 5.
According to the ACC case statement, Anis Alamgir was found to have assets worth Tk25 lakh in immovable property and Tk3.84 crore in movable assets, totaling Tk4.09 crore. After accounting for expenses of Tk15.90 lakh, total accumulated wealth stood at Tk4.25 crore.
His declared legal income was Tk99.09 lakh, including savings, earnings from talk shows and consultancy, land sale, and bank interest. This leaves an unexplained wealth of Tk3.26 crore, about 77% of his total assets, which the ACC classified as beyond known sources of income.
