Update : 21 Jan 2026, 12:50 PM

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a fugitive convict sentenced to death for crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War, surrendered to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Wednesday morning.

He surrendered before the tribunal registrar, claiming innocence. Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed that the prosecution had received his surrender application.

“Maulana Abul Kalam Azad has submitted an application to surrender, which has been received by the prosecution,” Tamim said.

Abul Kalam Azad was convicted on multiple counts of crimes against humanity. On January 21, 2013, International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by then chairman Justice Obaidul Hasan, sentenced him to death.

According to the prosecution, Azad had applied to the Home Ministry last year seeking suspension of his sentence. He surrendered to the tribunal on Wednesday following that application.
